Promoting rights and choices: Section three

Identify how rights and choices can be promoted in a real care service

Introduction

In this final section you’ll have a chance to imagine what it’s like to promote rights and choices in everyday practice. You’ll look around a bedroom, ensuite bathroom and stairway in a care home service and identify items in each room which provide care workers an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in this area.

As you explore the rooms and items in the 360 tour we hope you will be able to make some links to the knowledge you’ve gained so far in this resource.

We suggest you try to make some connections between the items and

  • human rights and equality
  • choice and control
  • safeguarding.

Training and qualifications

Helping people to safeguard themselves from harm, while also promoting their rights and choices, is a core area of practice for all types of care professional and a good understanding can help you in your career. In fact, everyone who completes a care qualification in the workplace (called a Scottish Vocational Qualification, or SVQ) will do a mandatory unit about safeguarding. The safeguarding unit for childcare is similar to the safeguarding unit in social care. We’ve used them as inspiration for this activity.
